What is Avian Flu or Bird Flu?
Bird flu also termed avian influenza is caused by Type A viruses. Type A the virus is naturally present in wild aquatic birds which can affect poultry and other birds. There are a dozen types of bird flu among which H5N1 and H7N9 have recently caused strain of bird flu in India. It is a highly contingent disease that affects thousands of birds, but H5N1 is the most common form of bird flu that can effects humans too. Transmission of is disease transmits only when a person comes in contact with an infected bird. Hence, the crowded market of poultry can act as a major spreader. Infected birds continue to release this virus in feces and saliva for ten long days.
The symptoms of H5N1 in humans are:-

We have observed a resurgence of bird flu this year in India. On 19th February 2006, India observed its first outbreak of H5N1. In 2006 India observe the deadliest bird flu affect thousand of birds around the country. This time bird flu was recorded in India in the first week of the new year, 2021. It was first reported in Kottayam and Alappuzha, Kerala. Until now more than 11 states- Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, etc.- have been affected by this pernicious disease.
Pong Dam wetland of Himachal Pradesh is the winter paradise, with silver-green water profusion of alluring birds. But, this winter has been a little different. The birds in the largest man-made wetland are hit by H5N1. Bar- Headed Goose, an endangered species, are the worst hit by this influenza, almost 4020 birds are killed. According to experts, some birds were observed acting strangely before their death, birds with healthy wings were unable to fly. Amid the spread of bird flu in India like a forest fire, the state banned the import of poultry products.
Kerala, God’s own place has been affected badly by the outbreak of bird flu in India. Bird flu has been declared a state disaster in Kerala. Over 70000 ducks died due to the spread of avian influenza. It did not take long for the government to notice the roll-out of bird flu in the state. Sanitization of birds and bird culling were the steps taken to curb this deadly disease. Today no new fresh cases if the bird flu has been identified there.
Bird flu was confirmed in Maharashtra after the dreadful death of 900 hens at a poultry farm in a village. Actions are been taken to cull all birds in 1-km of the radius in that area. A proficient medical team has been sent at the drop of the hat. Ban on transportation of birds from that area has been imposed to avoid spread. There isn’t a panic situation since appropriate actions are being taken by the authorities to curb this disease. Maharashtra is the state that was adversely affected by Coronavirus and not H5N1 is deepening its roots.
Delhi has become the 9th state to confirm avian influenza. Sanjay Lake of Delhi has recorded eight birds with this flu. The Delhi government is taking all necessary steps to avoid the spread of the flu. Furthermore, 91 crows have been seen dead in many places in Delhi. The poultry market of Ghezipur has been shut down in the wake of this disease. A check of availability of PPE kits has been put to ensure the safety of workers. Increase awareness, bird culling, disposal of carcasses, and bird waste are some of the efficient steps taken to curb bird flu.
Nearly 200 birds mostly crow were found dead due to avian influenza in different cities of Uttarakhand. The premise of AIIMs was found covered with 28 dead pigeons and crows in the state. The samples of these birds test positive for this flu. The control room and toll-free number are monitoring the situation of poultry.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, asked states to stay alert on bird flu and to keep a watch on all zoos. He has also warned all to keep bay with fake news. In his speech, he also highlighted that people shouldn’t panic as properly cooked meat can’t spread bird flu as the virus is killed at a temperature of 75°c.
The outbreak of bird flu is another challenge for the country in this phase of a pandemic. Hope we recover to it’s earliest.
